The Colourful Coast is a partnership of organisations and community groups caring for the rich ecology and complex history of the clifftops and shores from Whitehaven to St Bees, for everyone to enjoy.

Our key Partners are the National Trust, The Land Trust, Natural England, the RSPB, Cumbria Wildlife Trust, Copeland Borough Council, Cumbria County Council, Whitehaven Developments and St Bees Parish Council.

Since 2009 these organisations have worked together to improve access, infrastructure, interpretation, public awareness and enjoyment of the spectacular 10 km stretch of coastline and cliff from Whitehaven to St Bees.  In 2016 a dedicated Project Officer was employed to move forwards the work of the partnership.

A map of our area of focus can be found below.  The land in the Colourful Coast area is of extremely high value in terms of land and seascape, recognised through its variety of definitions and designations including Heritage Coast, SSSI, MCZ and several Scheduled Ancient Monuments.   More information about these can be found in the designations section of the website.  However the area is also facing several threats including being squeezed from coastal erosion on its seaward side and landward developments.   While we mainly focus on the area below we are always interested in getting involved in work or projects which are outside the area so please do get in contact.
